Spider-Man

Spider-Man

Your friendly, neighborhood Spider-Man

From comics to animated series to feature films to even a musical to now a multiverse, Marvel has surely hit a home-run with the Spider-Man franchise, and yet, with the cat (nay the spider) quite literally out of the bag, Spider-Man has no way home. We started this journey with Marvel civilians choosing to ignore the ‘real’ identity of the teenager that saved them, and here we are in 2021 – where J. Jonah Jameson has unmasked Spider-Man, and while we digest that leap, let us unmask some supercool bits of Spider-Man trivia!

  1. You Can Do It Too

Spider-Man was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko to instill the idea amongst teenagers that anybody could be a superhero. With Peter Parker being a high school student from Queens, with his “self-obsessions with rejection, inadequacy, and loneliness”, he seemed very relatable to the younger audience. Inspirational? I think so…

  1. With great power…

Although Uncle Ben may have said, “with great power there must also come great responsibility”, the origins of this iconic line dates way back to 4th century BC in the allusion of the Sword of Damocles, with references of it during the French Revolution, and also, THE BIBLE. #BungleBen

  1. Earning Your Bread.. Err.. Ham..

Voiced by the very funny – John Mulaney, Spider-Ham (aka Peter Porker), the parody version of Spider-Man, works at a newspaper called the ‘Daily Beagle.’ Beagle… Get it?

  1. Spiders, Man

‘Filistata Maguirei’ and ‘Pritha Garfieldi’ are species of spiders discovered in Iran in 2015 that are named after Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. FOMO, Tom!?

  1. The Tarantula

Although, Marvel won the long game with Spider-Man, they were beaten to releasing a spiderling superhero by DC which won the battle with a superhero named ‘The Tarantula’, who would shoot webs through customized guns. Eeks!

  1. Visually Different

The thought of adding a hyphen between ‘Spider’ and ‘Man’ came to the creators to textually distinguish this troubled teenager from Superman. Two roads diverged and some such, and I took the one hyphenated, and that has made all the difference.
