The Birth of James Bond on the Silver Screen

“Bond. James Bond.”

With these words, a hero of the modern world was born. Ian Fleming’s gentleman spy hero and masculine icon, James Bond, has served as a worldwide inspiration in terms of lifestyle, gear, and sophistication.

In the early 1960s, American producer Albert R. “Cubby” Broccoli and Canadian producer Harry Saltzman teamed up to create Eon Productions with a dream to adapt Fleming’s novel and bring Bond to the big screens. Little did they know that with the release of their movie this day 60 years ago starring Sean Connery, Dr No, they’d be giving life to an icon that will dominate the cinemas for ages to come.

Sixty years, 26 films, six actors, and billions of dollars in box office later, we’re still talking about Agent 007, his classic heritage, and his big-screen adventures.

Bond’s creator, Ian Fleming, was a former naval intelligence officer who served in World War II. Fleming’s first novel about the suave British intelligence agent, Casino Royale was published in 1953 and immediately became an international bestseller. The book introduced the character of James Bond, an agent of Her Majesty’s Secret Intelligence Service (MI6). The rest is history.

We all know that he likes his Martini shaken, not stirred, his favourite exotic car is an Aston Martin and his original preferred choice of weapon was the Beretta 418. Although Bond radiated charisma and style, he was also intensely solitary and virtually friendless, despite his many affairs.

From the iconic performances by Sean Connery to the most recent big-screen 007, Daniel Craig, several actors have pulled on the suit and stepped into the famous Aston Martin on screen. Each Bond gives the character his own flair.

There are few things as iconic as James Bond. The dapper British spy has been thrilling audiences for 60 years and shows no signs of slowing down. Whether thwarting a terrorist plot or seducing a beautiful woman, Bond always gets the job done with style.

If you’re a fan of James Bond, then you’re in for a treat. KarmaPlay is celebrating 60 Years of the Bond series with a special quiz on James Bond. So, get your brain guns ready. It’s going to be “questions at dawn”, Bond style, only on KarmaPlay!
